Cornus (Dogwoods)

A beautiful group of large shrubs or small trees. They are best grown in the cooler regions. Some varieties produce masses of bracts ("flowers") in early spring before the leaves appear; others are in late spring or summer with the foliage. The flower colours come in a range of pink, white or creamy-yellow. The deciduous varieties have good autumn colours. Cornus alba 'Sibirica' A wide spreading shrub forming a thicket of stems that are bright red in winter. Cream flowers in spring. Grows to approx 1.5-2M. Will grow in wet areas. Cornus capitata "Evergreen Dogwood"An evergreen Dogwood, producing masses of creamy-yellow flower bracts in summer which develop pink overtones as they mature. An attractive, round topped tree growing to approx 6M. Large strawberry-like fruit in autumn. Cornus controversa A magnificent, deciduous tree producing masses of flat sprays of cream coloured flowers on horizontal branches. Cornus florida "White Dogwood"A small deciduous tree, producing masses of white flower bracts on bare brances in early spring. Attractive red  autumn coloured foliage. Cornus florida 'Rubra' "Pink Dogwood" One of the most spectacular spring flowering, small trees. The entire plant is covered with bracts that open dark pink, before fading to light pink. Grows to approx 5M. Good autumn foliage. Corunus kousa var chinensis 'Satomi' A beautiful spreading tree growing to approx 5M x 4M. Produces masses of salmon-pink flowers in spring. good autumn foliage. Cornus x 'Celestial' A small tree, growing to approx 5M x 4M. In spring the plant is covered by masses of white bracts. These flowers take on pink tonings by the end of spring as shown in the second photo. This variety is protected by Plant Breeder Rights. Cornus x 'Norman Haddon' A beautiful tree with a spreading habit. In summer the bracts open creamy-white before developing pink tones. Strawberry-like fruit in autumn. In warm areas this tree will keep its leaves during winter. Cornus alternifolia 'Argentea' A deciduous large shrub with distinctive green and white leaves. Cornus florida 'Pendula" "Weeping Dogwood"A very rare form with white flowers in spring. Grafted on a standard so that the branches gracefully cascade down to form a mushroom shaped palnt. Cornus kousa "Japanese Dogwood" A large deciduous shrub, producing masses of creamy-white flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by strawberry-like fruit in autumn. Excellent autumn colours. Grows to approx 5m. Cornus x 'Aurora' A small tree, growing to approx 5M x 4M. In spring the plant is covered by masses of velvety white bracts developing pinkish overtones as the flowers age. This variety is protected by Plant Breeder Rights. Cornus x 'Constellation' A beautiful tree, growing to approx 6M x 4M. In spring the plant is covered by masses of white bracts. Excellent, vivid autumn colours. Cornus x 'Stellar Pink' A beautiful tree, vase shaped at first, broader when mature. In spring, masses of bracts are formed, their colour being soft pink fading to white in the centre.
