Portland’s Chinese Garden, in the fall

Last week I found myself in downtown Portland on a sunny morning with a free hour. While it was tempting to do a little shopping (after all it is scarves and sweaters season) instead I headed to the Lan Su Garden, I’d never visited in the fall and thought it might be a good time to see what they were up to. While the official low temperature has been as low as 30 degrees at the Portland Airport these Musa Basjoo were still looking lush, no sign of frost damage. Although some of the stalks had been wrapped. As I walked up to this small potted tree I thought someone had some fun placing red fruits and flowers on it… Nope! Those would be the real thing, Pomegranates…

Αγριοπασχαλιά Βιότοπος – περιγραφή: Η λατινική ονομασία του βοτάνου είναι Melia Azedarach ( Μελία η Αζεδαράχειος). Συνώνυμο της είναι το Arbor fraxinifolio. Η ονομασία Μελία δεν ανταποκρίνεται προς την πραγματικότητα γιατί έτσι ονομάζουμε άλλο δέντρο (Φράξινος) που φύεται στα δάση της χώρας μας. Στην πραγματικότητα ονομάζεται ψευδομελία και περιλαμβάνει 5 είδη. Στη χώρα μας το συναντούμε με τις ονομασίες Πασχαλιά (σε όλη την Ελλάδα σχεδόν την αποκαλούν έτσι γιατί ανθίζει τον Απρίλιο μαζί με την Πασχαλιά και τα άνθη τους μοιάζουν), Σολωμό (Νάξο), Μοσχοκαρφιά, Μελιά, Αγριοπασχαλιά, Λίλας των Ινδιών, Φράξος. Στην Κύπρο την ονομάζουν και Λουλουδιά ή Μαυρομάτα. Ανήκει στην οικογένεια των Ιπποκαστανεωδών ή των Μελιωδών. Είναι δέντρο ιθαγενές σε Ινδίες, Αυστραλία και Β. Αμερική. Secrets of the Trade Last season, in order to augment our 4 inch and 6 inch container sales, we experimented with planting up mixed Sedum & Sempervivum containers in various sizes and types. We planted up shallow hypertufa containers in the spring and plastic bowl shaped containers in early summer. The plastic containers were a big hit for early summer sales. We sold around 700 of them to retail nurseries. The bowls used were 12", 14" & 16" (30 cm, 36 cm, 41 cm) in the colors 'terra cotta' and 'stone white'. The 'stone white' containers were very difficult to sell, so we eventually ended up transplanting all of them back into 'terra cotta' colored containers. All sizes sold, but the 12" (30 cm) size sold 4 to 1 over the other two sizes. The wholesale price on the 12" (30 cm) size was $14.00 USA. Price point seemed to be an important issue in the summer months. Larger sizes had too high of a price
